Ginger Beer
Spicy and sweet, ginger beer is a beverage that is increasing in popularity. Seemingly, this drink is new since not too many people have encountered it before. However ginger beer has been around for quite a while. It originated in Victorian England in the mid-18th century. Ginger beer was originally brewed as an alcoholic drink unlike the ginger beer we are familiar with today.
Alcoholic ginger beer is made by fermenting water, sugar, ginger and a composite organism referred to as ‘ginger beer plant’ or GBP. Ginger beer plant is made up of a fungus, yeast and bacteria.
Non-alcoholic ginger beer or ginger beer soft drink is what most of us are familiar with. This ginger beer is not fermented. This beverage has seen increased popularity due to its use in many popular mixed drinks.
Ginger ale and ginger beer, while sounding similar have two very different flavor profiles. Ginger ale is sweet, light and very bubbly while ginger beer is stronger, spicier with markedly less carbonation.
